Cortina d'Ampezzo is located at a height of 1224 m in the large, green valley called “ampezzana” along the Boite Valley, surrounded by some of the highest and most famous mountain peaks of the Dolomites, such as the “Cristallo”, the “Tofane” and the “Sorapiss”. The sunny position, the healthy mountain climate and the presence of numerous sports tourism facilities over the years have made it one of the most famous and popular tourist resorts of the Dolomites.
The beautiful mountains around Cortina offer a great variety of excursions including hiking, climbing, iron way climbing and walking treks for all visitors to the area from leisure tourists to the most serious climbers.
The presence of several cable cars and chairlifts also allows quick access to some beautiful panoramic sights, like the Faloria, Cinque Torri, or even the Tofana di Mezzo at over 3000m hight. >>><<<
In winter, Cortina is transformed into one of the best-equipped Italian places for winter sports of all kinds. Noteworthy for its social life and for being a meeting place for cultural and international events, including the literary prize "Cortina-Ulisse", the most important prize for popular science essays, that since 1949 is assigned by a jury of science journalists.
The panoramas and the sporting attractions of Cortina have contributed to develop a thriving tourism and the growth of highly reputable hotel accommodations, which date back to as early as the mid-1800 when the explorer of the Dolomites Paul Grohmann and other pioneers attracted the attention of mountaineers of that era in the mountains of Cortina.
The first hotels were built around 1875 and some of them still exist, such as the hotel Croce Bianca, l'Aquila Nera and Stella d'Oro.
Numerous holiday opportunities are available in many hotel resorts, apartments and hostels in the center as well as in the villages around the city.
The symbol of Cortina is undoubtedly the bell tower of the parish church of SS. Filippo and Giacomo, recently elected as the Basilica Minore, 72 meters high and built in Gothic style between 1853 and 1858.
Not to miss is a visit to the so-called "living room of Cortina" known as “salotto di Cortina”, the pedestrian promenade along Corso Italia, and to the "House of the Frescoes" or "Palace of Painting" known as “Casa degli affreschi” or “Palazzo della Pittura”, whose outer walls are decorated with many frescoes realised by the Ghedina brothers in the 1800s. One of the many must-see attractions in Cortina.
