Cibiana di Cadore

Cibiana di Cadore rises up at 985m high in the lower Ampezzo Valley, about 27 kms from Cortina, along the small and secluded valley of the torrent Rite alongside the state-road No 347 which runs through the Forcella Cibiana, leading to Val Zoldana. Cibiana is also known as the "Land of Murals" for the presence of numerous large frescoes painted on the walls of the town houses. There are more than fifty paintings created by Italian and foreign artists, including world-famous artists arriving from as far as Japan and Russia, it is an outdoor museum annually enriched by new works. The initiative was born in 1980 in order to recover traditions, stories and crafts of the village culture: in fact the frescoes often represent crafts and history of the family which lives in the house with the painting, such as blacksmiths, carpenters, millers etc. >>><<<

This form of contemporary art has given a major boost to tourism of the town, along with the "Museum of the Clouds," one of the locations of the Messner Mountain Museum, curated by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner.
The museum, inaugurated in 2002, is located on Monte Rite on the remains of an old fort of the First World War and is dedicated to the history of the Dolomites.
With its altitude of 2181m it is the highest museum in Europe. From the tourist point of view Cibiana has to offer interesting tours such as the old iron mines or a walk along the nature trail of Monte Rite, as well as tennis courts, a floodlit ring for cross-country skiing, an adventure park and an ice skating rink.

Various options for tourist accommodation, in both summer and winter is available: in addition to holiday apartments, warm hospitality is guaranteed at the Hotel Remauro, Baita Deon, the Rifugio Remauro at Passo Cibiana and the Rifugio Dolomites on the summit of Monte Rite.
In the past mining of iron mines has been of great importance in these mountains, mostly used for the production of keys, mining activity is still present with a major modern factory.
Also worth noting are the craftsmanship of "Scarpete", typical slippers made of string and velvet, baskets of wood called "Zestoa", quilts and woollen shawls, as well as straw rag dolls. In the parish church of San Lorenzo there are frescoes attributed to the school of “Tiziano”.
